Ask Ebenezer

Ask me about your money in plain words and I answer from your own ledger. Nothing else goes into the answer: no market gossip, no tips from a cousin, no guess at what the model may have read somewhere. If the ledger cannot answer you, I say what is missing.

Ask answers for one portfolio at a time, the one you have open.

What You Can Ask

Anything the ledger can answer:

  • "Is HODL working for me?"
  • "Where am I losing to the index?"
  • "How much is sitting idle?"
  • "Which section has done worst after inflation?"
  • "How much of what I own is in one holding?"
  • "Is my life cover enough for what I owe?"
  • "How much did I spend on food last month?"
  • "What is due on my cards?"

I answer in a few plain sentences, in lakh and crore, and offer a question or two you might ask next.

What I Read

Every answer comes from one plain-text ledger, and you may read every word of it under What Ebenezer sees. It holds:

  • The whole portfolio: Net worth, what is owned, owed and put in, and the wealth and stocks XIRR, each against the same money in your benchmark.
  • Each section: Its value, what went in, its XIRR, and what that is after inflation. Your own notes on a section are in there too, word for word.
  • Your holdings: The largest in each section, with value and cost.
  • Idle money: What your savings earn against inflation, and what they lose in buying power each year.
  • Cover: Life and health cover against what you owe, and the premiums.
  • Your trading: Buys and sells in each Stocks section, what sales have realised, and how long you have held what you hold.
  • News: The stories judged signal, with their reasons.
  • Spending and cards: This month by category against last, what each card owes and when, and your account balances.
  • Entries that look wrong: A cost far too low for its value, which smells of a typo, and holdings with no price yet.

With each question the model also gets my voice and your standing instructions from Settings. See Voice.

Had You Never Sold

For each Stocks section where you have sold something, the ledger says what every buy would be worth today had you never sold any of it, with the XIRR that would have earned. This is how I answer "Is HODL working for me?": I set what you did against what doing nothing would have got you. If doing nothing would have won, I will say so.

No Buy Or Sell Calls

I will not tell you to buy or sell a particular share or fund. I explain what your numbers show and what you might look into, and the decision stays yours. Answers come from your ledger and an AI model you chose. They are not advice.

The Conversation

I keep nothing you ask. A fresh chat starts each visit, and within one, your recent messages go with each new question, so you may say "and the year before?" without repeating yourself.

When Something Is Off

  • No AI model: Ask needs one, and only the owner can connect it. What Ebenezer sees still works without. See AI Model.
  • Placeholders like [ADDRESS] in an answer: Some OpenRouter accounts redact names before the model sees them. I say so when it happens; turn off PII redaction for that key on OpenRouter.
  • Asked to wait a minute: You have hit the hourly limit on requests to the model. See Troubleshooting.
